Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

The Department of Political Science and Economics at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston, wishes to hire up to three indeterminate faculty members at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (UT-02, UT-03 or UT-04) from all subfields in political science.  For economics, preference may be given to an economist who can teach courses in public economics, public choice and political economy. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in Political Science, Political Studies, Government, Public Administration, Public Policy or Economics from a recognized university at the time of hiring. Anticipated start date is January 1, 2025. For the purposes of designated group hiring, candidates with Indigenous lived expertise are especially encouraged to apply and will be explicitly solicited through a parallel process.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to fill immediate vacancies and may be used to staff future vacancies with various employment tenures (temporary and permanent), language profiles, security requirements, and conditions of employment.

Number of positions to be filled: up to 3.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses and supervise at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability, or demonstrate the potential to develop the ability, to contribute to the RMC Core Curriculum and the Political Science undergraduate programme.  Ability to teach in the MPA and/or War Studies graduate programs is considered an asset.

Applicants must provide evidence of a strong teaching portfolio and a commitment to excellence in pedagogy. RMC is a bilingual national institution.

The successful candidates will demonstrate an active independent research program. A commitment to research will be demonstrated by a robust peer-reviewed publication record measured by both quantity and/or rate of publication as well as success in attracting competitive extramural research funding.

In addition, the successful candidate will be required contribute through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and the broader community. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a university environment is essential.

Essential Qualifications

Education

A PhD degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Political Science, Political Studies, Government, Public Administration or Public Policy, and Economics. 

Official Language Proficiency

Various language requirements: English Essential; French Essential; Bilingual Imperative: BBB/BBB or CBC/CBC.

Experience
For all levels of positions
  • E1: Teaching excellence in political science at the university level, as demonstrated by full responsibility for at least one course, or acceptable equivalency.
  • E2: Demonstrated research excellence at the university level in political science, broadly understood. Acceptable research experience: research report, invited/accepted conference or workshop presentation, technical report, peer-reviewed articles published in peer-reviewed journals, professional journals or university presses or other form of demonstrable expertise in another multimedia medium in any of the above-mentioned areas. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following subfields may receive priority consideration:

For Associate Professor (UT03) position
  • E6: Experience that demonstrates effective teaching and innovation at the university level in the fields related to the position being staffed over a period of at least two years.
  • E7: Experience that demonstrates a well-developed research program, sustained independent scholarly*** activity with national impact and recognition, and extramural research funding over a period of years in a field related to the position being staffed.
  • E8: Demonstrated excellence in university administration and service, as defined by RMC’s collective agreement
For Full Professor (UT04) position
  • E9: Experience that demonstrates teaching excellence, innovation as well as program and curriculum development and management at the university level in the fields related to the position being staffed over a period of years.
  • E10: Experience that demonstrates a mature research program, superior independent scholarly*** activity with international impact and recognition, and sustained extramural research funding over many years in a field related to the position being staffed.
  • E11: A record of attracting and mentoring graduate students.
  • E12: Demonstrated leadership in university administration, and the scholarly field, discipline or academic community.

***Scholarly is defined as publishing in ranked refereed journals of international reputation, academic presses of international standing, and/or equivalent refereed outlets in fields related to position being staffed.
