About the Department of Applied Military Science

Victoria per scientiam

The Department of Applied Military Science (AMS) in Kingston, Ontario is a component of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) and its primary purpose is to support the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) by developing Officers and Warrant Officers (WOs) to be key players in the Capability Development Process. To meet its mandate, AMS offers two programs, the Army Technical Staff Officer Program (ATSOP), and the Army's Technical Warrant Officers Program (ATWOP).

All programs, through rigorous academic as well as practical military components, are focused on producing Officers and WOs that are educated and skilled in conducting Capability Development activities, through a broad base of knowledge in science, technology and management, and who have the ability to apply that knowledge within a team environment to enhance the capabilities of the CAF.

The success of AMS in preparing students to meet the challenges of developing the future CAF is clearly evident by the number of high-profile graduates from this program who are currently serving in key command and staff positions. It should be noted that the importance of AMS to the future of the CAF extends beyond its ability to train the Officer Corps. As WOs start to take on greater roles within the development process they will need more advanced skill sets to remain relevant members of the Defence Team.

The number of high-profile graduates that have had the education and training provided by AMS is no coincidence. The increasing sophistication and complexity of military operations makes it necessary to have skilled commanders and staff that can effectively use, maintain, and influence the acquisition of the right defence resources. The department provides these advanced skills and refers to the process as giving Officers and WOs “the AMS Advantage”.

In essence, “the AMS Advantage” provides CAF members with the skills and knowledge needed by tomorrow’s leaders today. AMS produces graduates that understand the impact and benefits of new capabilities on doctrine & operational concepts so they can play a key role in developing the CAF of tomorrow.
