13 March 2023: Results of the 2023 HEC CSR Challenge
The Royal Military College of Canada finished 4th overall earning them an “Honourable Mention”. Representing RMC for the annual prestigious HEC MBA Corporate Social Responsibilities challenge were Mathew Go, Louis Kyron, Robert Mertens, and Barb Sjaarda.
The challenge was intense – teams on the fly had three hours to complete case study analysis from start to finish by delivering polished presentations, live before judges. The Paladins were up for the challenge, competing against full-time teams from traditional schools, hitting above their weight class and exceeding expectations – and they did not disappoint, finishing 4th amongst all MBA schools in the international competition.

The unique delivery and composition of the program here at RMC fosters an environment amongst students that facilitates synergistic teams armed with the tools to compete and contribute at the highest level. Robert Mertens is a part-time MBA student from Toronto, Ontario. He has a M.Sc. from the University of Toronto and has spent 20 years working as a civilian employee for the Department of National Defence. Recently he has taken on a new position with Employment and Social Development Canada as an IT Technical Advisor.
What Robert loves most about his experience at the Royal Military College of Canada’s MBA programme is its uniqueness: from the sense of RMC’s distinguished history (e.g., pioneering innovations such as the M.V. Cordite first all-welded aluminum vessel built in Canada), to working with international students from around the world. The educational opportunity is unmatched as he learns in a mixed military and civilian environment from industry-leading professors.
Barbara Sjaarda is a part-time MBA student from Ottawa, Ontario. She is currently a Staff Sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service and has held many different roles, including Patrol Supervisor, Recruiting Officer, Fraud Investigator, and Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Investigator. Before policing, she spent ten years in the Royal Canadian Artillery reserve. She enjoys spending time with her husband of 18 years and three teenage children.
What Barbara enjoys most about RMC are the professors who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom and the other students who have an incredible breadth and depth of work and lived experience. This creates a dynamic learning environment where knowledge is gained as much from books as from the experiences of fellow students.
Dr. Matthew C. Go is a board-certified forensic anthropologist currently working at the U.S. Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in Honolulu, Hawaii. He earned his MA and PhD in anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed his undergraduate training in archaeology, biological sciences, and forensic studies at Simon Fraser University. He is also currently completing an MBA part-time from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). Matthew is the youngest Diplomate certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, which also makes him the first and only Filipino and third Canadian to achieve what is regarded as the highest level of professional qualification in the field of forensic anthropology. Matthew enjoys the programme at RMC for its comprehensive breadth of management topics and flexible learning modes. The diverse background of students and teachers allows for rich discussions that reflect multiple perspectives and creative problem solving.
Louis Kyron resides in Whitby, Ontario, Louis is a part-time student in RMC's MBA programme. Louis is a CPA, CGA and a member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Journalists. He has more than 3 decades of progressive overlapping experience in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. He has been a Senior Analyst for the Finance Department at the Regional Municipal of Durham for the past 22 years. Outside of work, Louis spends much of his time in service of others, whether it be donating Accounting expertise to local Charities, sitting on the Boards as well as being behind the bench of youth hockey associations, or appearing at town halls, guest speaking at the local College, writing published articles and short stories alike, or appearing on media interviews as an industry-specific subject matter expert.
Louis selected the RMC MBA programme because it includes both military and civilian students, bridging that traditional divide. The program is as challenging as it is rich, rewarding, and unique, attracting students from across sectors, education, experience, and demographics. The professors include the "go to" experts sought out for media interviews and are always there for the students.

David Patch participated in the 5th annual Queens/RMC Chem Eng Poster Day where he presented his research on the release of silver nanomaterials from commercial products. He represented both his research group and university with pride, and after fielding numerous questions from the judges, was awarded ‘Best PhD Poster’.
