Capt Van Veen joined the CAF Regular Force as communicator researcher non-commissioned member (NCM) in August 2004 working within several operational roles at CFS Leitrim focused in various SIGINT areas (Morse code, over the horizon radar, satellite communications, cellular data). He deployed in 2010 to Afghanistan within the unmanned aerial vehicle detachment as an electronic warfare operator.
Upon return from overseas, he was employed within Defence Research and Development Ottawa (DRDC) working closely with Dr. Derek Elsaesser’s and Dr. Will Reed’s research team in support of a multi-year electronic warfare study that culminated in live in-person trials in Kingston, ON, and Woomera, Australia. These experiments utilized in-house developed electronic warfare technologies used against scenarios developed by Capt Van Veen, where his work with the Australian military supported new electronic warfare data fusion capabilities that were sorely needed during his time in Afghanistan. Following this, he supported DRDC Toronto regarding research of ground control stations for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Prior to commissioning as Personnel Selection Officer (PSO), Capt Van Veen was employed as a MCpl crew commander at 21 Electronic Warfare regiment in Kingston. After completing his undergrad through the UTPNCM program, he went on to finish his Masters at Carleton University where he is now completing his PhD, having achieved candidacy. His work as a PSO has led them across the country in Assessment Centre work and frontline support to multiple bases, while having also conducted research for the Director General of Military Personnel Research and Analysis (DGMPRA).
This background has led to his current role as a lecturer within the Military faculty at RMC. His research interests include: well-being, philosophy of science, ethics, and a variety of topics related to industrial/organizational psychology. He is experienced with both quantitative and qualitative approaches as well as mixed-methods research.
